CREATURE FEATURE:  BATS

The Most Misunderstood Animals On Earth!

False myths & old wives tales generate needless fear of bats and threaten their habitat around the world.  In reality, bats are extremely beneficial to our planet and we'd be in big trouble without them.

Unfortunately, the bat population is decreasing across the globe at the hands of those who misunderstand & destroy them.  Fact is, bats are fascinating  mammals who only have one young each year.   Some bats consume their body weight in insects daily.  While they don't see like we do, bats use a form of sonar to navigate and are able to distinguish shapes and colors.

Bats are not flying rodents, nor are they dirty and diseased.  They are not after human blood and do not get tangled in your hair; they would prefer to keep away from humans and tend to their own...

For more information on bats, please visit www.batworld.org or www.batcon.org.

Prevent Animal Bites

Generally, animals attack when they are frightened or threatened, and when they are being protective.  If you witness a dangerous situation involving an animal, do not approach, call your local animal control unit immediately!

Here are some tips to prevent animal bites:  Do not approach animals when they are eating or drinking - Do not pet animals when they have babies - Do not scare, tease, hurt or sneak up on any animal - Do not attempt to stop animals who are fighting - Do not approach sick or injured animals - Do not pick up unfamiliar animals - Do not attempt to pet or capture wild animals - Never hit or mistreat any animal - Always ask permission before touching an animal you don't know.

Beware of these warning signs:  Glaring eyes - Standing hair on back - Tail up and stiff or between legs - Ears back - Nose wrinkled - Teeth showing - Hissing, growling or barking.

What to do if you are threatened:  Stay calm and stand still, do not scream or run - Speak firmly NO, SIT, GO HOME! - Break eye contact - Back away slowly facing the animal's head - Shield yourself by holding a package or large object in front of you.

What to do if you are bitten:  Wash the wound thoroughly with soap & warm water - Confine the animal only if it is safe to do so - Call animal control in your area - Seek medical attention.

FAVORITE FALL TREATS:  Pets love Pumpkeggs!  Simply boil eggs, scoop out yolk and fill with mashed pumpkin.  When using canned pumpkin, do not use pumpkin pie mix, the only ingredient should be pumpkin.  Optional: Sprinkle with fresh picked grass :)

NOM NOM NOM!

Banarrots

Ingredients:  1 banana, 1 heaping tblspn chopped carrots, 2 tblspns flour, 1 tspn water.

Preheat toaster oven to 350.  In a bowl, mush banana, flour and water with a fork until blended.  Stir in carrots.  Line toaster oven tray with foil & drop spoonfulls of batter one inch apart on foil.  Bake about 10 minutes (depending on size).  Makes six medium treats.  Finished treat is soft and will stick to foil but use spatula to pull off gently.  Yummy for pets & people too!

*For the summer version, you may omit the flour & freeze treats instead of baking.
